Tolerance controls how similar a pixel color must be to the selected background color to be removed. A value of 0 removes only the exact color clicked. Higher values remove nearby shades too — useful for gradients or slightly uneven backgrounds.
Feathering smooths out the edges of the removed area by making pixels near the boundary semi-transparent instead of completely transparent. This reduces jagged edges on complex subjects.
